Research Suggest
that Vitamin E Wards off Prostate Cancer (March 1998)
Researchers in Finland say vitamin E has been
shown to protect older men against the development of prostate cancer.
Writing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, scientists at the University of
Helsinki say that long-term daily use of at least 50 milligrams of vitamin E among male
smokers ranging in age from 50 to 69 "was associated with a substantial reduction in
incidence of and mortality from prostate cancer."
Those men taking vitamin E alone or with beta-carotene, a significant provider of vitamin
A, had a 32 percent lower incidence while those taking vitamin E alone had a 41 percent
lower rate, researchers say.
The results, scientists write, suggest "vitamin E has the potential to prevent one of
the most common malignant tumors in the North American and European populations."
