Alternative and Integral Therapies for Insomnia

Reflexology

Reflexologists believe that every part of the body is reflected in reflex areas on the hands and feet According to them, the body is divided into ten vertical zones or channels of energy, which run from the head down through the body and surface at the reflex areas on the hands and feet. By applying finger and thumb pressure to a specific point on the foot, the therapist can stimulate or rebalance the energy in the related zone and improve the health of the associated body parts. Treatments are aimed at stimulating the body's own healing potential.

Reflexology For Restful Sleep

Foot massage can be extremely soothing. Start the treatment by gently massaging the feet. Work on the reflex areas keeping your movements slow and rhythmic. Work over an area several times and when pressing into a point, hold for about 30 seconds. Special emphasis should be given to specific reflex points for insomnia. These include the reflexes for the brain, solar plexus, spine, respiratory, and circulatory systems.

Cautions

Not recommended for pregnant women, diabetics, epileptics, or anyone receiving medical treatment.

How to do Reflexolgy

Sit comfortably. Rest one bare foot on the other leg. Support your foot with your left hand (your right hand if left-handed) and work on the reflex points with your other hand.

Begin by working all over the foot. Pay particular attention to the brain area at the top of your big toe and also on the top of your next two toes.

Work your thumb from the middle of your big toe on the sole of your foot, up to the top of your toe. Repeat two or three times on each foot.

Take a deep breath as you apply pressure to the solar plexus reflex point just below the ball of your foot. Exhale as you release the pressure. Repeat this three or four times.

Thumb walk down the spinal reflexes on the inside arch of your foot to relieve spinal tension, pain, and stiffness. Work along the length of the spinal reflexes two or three times on each foot.

Work up the sole of the foot from the base of the diaphragm line to the base of the toes. Using your index finger, work down the top of the foot from the grooves between the toes to the base of the lung area. Repeat on the other foot. Do not work excessively on this area.

Gently stroke all over the top of your feet from the toes down to the ankles on both feet.

Massage the following points before going to sleep for five to six minutes each: 3, 4, 9, 17, 20, 52.
