Diagnosing Depression
Symptoms of Depression - Contd.
Sleep
Disturbances
Changes in sleep can go both ways. Some people can't get a decent night's sleep, whereas others sleep endless extra hours and still feel tired all day.
You may experience:
Difficulty falling asleep
Waking up many times throughout the night
Awakening before daylight and then tossing and turning, waiting miserably for dawn to finally arrive.
Agitation and Lethargy
You may feel agitated or slowed down. In some cases you may experience both simultaneously. Agitation is particularly discomforting.
Signs of agitation
You feel restless
You are unable to sit still
You wring your hands
You pace about
You feel like you're "jumping out of your skin."
Signs of psychomotor retardation or slow down
You feel like a slow-moving turtle in a fast moving world
Your thoughts and actions slows down drastically.
People become frustrated with you because you take so long doing things or answering questions or walking down a hallway.
Little tasks become big things for you. It may take hours just to get dressed or prepare breakfast or read a newspaper article.
It become so frustrating that you "finally just give up trying."
Fatigue
You feel tired all the time. It is like your batteries are all completely drained or like your car is running on empty fuel.
It is hard to drag yourself out of bed in the morning.
Everything is a huge effort. You have no energy. At the end of the day it seems that nothing has been accomplished.
You can't face your work. Everything is piling up around you.
Your desk, your house, and maybe even your personal hygiene are all a mess. But you don't have the wherewithal to put things right.
