Mind/body medicine uses positive affirmations to counteract negative thoughts. Affirmations are typically brief, positive statements that focus on how well one feels and on how the disease is being conquered.

Affirmations you can use for arthritis

My fingers move freely and easily.

My hands are filled with energy and vitality as I (write, type, work at my computer, paint, sculpt, play the piano).

My hands are free of pain.

I enjoy radiant health, each and every day. I have healthy joints. My joint is feeling better all the time. I see my immune system restoring my joint to health. Every day, in every way, I feel better and better.

Try to make the affirmations as positive as possible.

Visualization

 In addition to writing and reciting your own affirmations, another effective technique is to use visualization. Picture the surface of your arthritic joint as if it were healed. To do so:

Imagine the most perfectly smooth grayish- white glistening cartilaginous surface of a chicken or turkey drumstick that you've ever seen. Every day you could take a few minutes to picture in your mind's eye an irregular inflamed discolored cartilaginous surface being transformed into a perfectly healthy joint surface.

How To Do It

Select a quiet and comfortable place where you will not be disturbed for at least 20 minutes. Sit down in a comfortable chair. Look at your arthritic joint(s). Think about how they feel. Now close your eyes and picture those joints as being healthy, pain-free and mobile. Imagine yourself easily moving the joint(s). With your mind's eye, see yourself using the joint(s) in daily activities, in hobbies and sports. Notice that there is no pain or discomfort.

Say one of the affirmations.

Practice "seeing" yourself healthy for 20 minutes, three times a day.
