Osteoarthritis

Causes of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is considered to be a natural result of the aging process. Nearly everyone over the age of sixty shows some signs of the disease. Age, excess weight, general wear and tear, and a lifetime of inadequate diet and exercise are the chief causes of osteoarthritis. Additional causes include skeletal defects, genetic factors, and hormonal deficiencies. Ironically, many people with osteoarthritis never suffer from the aches, pain, and stiffness associated with the disease. Listed below are some of the causes of osteoarthritis:

bullet

Heredity

bullet

Hormonal and sex factors.

bullet

Severe or recurrent joint injury from heavy physical activity

bullet

Excessive mobility/joint instability.

bullet

Skeletal postural defects

bullet

Age-related changes in collagen matrix repair mechanisms.

bullet

Excess overweight-excessive body weight and high body mass index are significant predictors of osteoarthritis of the knee.

bullet

Fractures and mechanical damage.

bullet

Exercise- activities such as long-distance running, basketball, etc. performed over many years will result in the development of arthritis.

bullet

Cold climate and atmospheric pressure changes

bullet

Inflammation.

bullet

Food allergy - common causes are nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants), wheat, and dairy

bullet

A diet high in animal products

bullet

Altered biochemistry.

bullet

Nutrient deficiency: calcium, magnesium, manganese, protein, essential fatty acids

bullet

Inflammatory joint disease.

bullet

Low-grade infections (e.g., dental infections) and autoimmune disease

bullet

Dehydration

bullet

Excessive acid in the body causing increased amounts of calcium, minerals, and acid toxins to be deposited in the joint, resulting in inflammation and pain

bullet

Other systemic disorders often associated with arthritis include nutritional deficiencies, digestive disorders, constipation, fatigue, emotional stress, and endocrine disorders
