This substance is used for constipation because of its softening properties, especially for stools that are dry and difficult to void. It is also occasionally used to clear heat associated with sores in the mouth and on the breasts, for which it can be taken internally or applied externally.

Don't use this substance during pregnancy, menstruation, or the postpartum period. It should also be avoided by those with spleen deficiency and by the elderly.
